The greatness of football

Football is a verry well recognized sport, it has made many movies. television series, and sport channels. It is evan known weekly ritual,  "Sunday Night Football". some movies are, Gridiron gang, Radio, The longest yard and Rudy. There are also tv series such as friday night lights. And other then church whats sunday good for? How bout FOOTBALL!!!

One of my favourit football movies was radio, i liked this movie because the moral is really good. The movie is about a middle aged man named radio who is mentally challenged the man is played by Cuba Gooding Jr. a great actor. Radio becomes friends with the football coach at T.L Hanna high school in Anderson, South Carolina and helps coach the football team.the coach befriends him because he feelsbad since some of his players were making fun of him. Before he met the coach he was very shy and lonley but after a couple decades he became an inspiration to the comunity.

Friday Night Lights is a tv seriesabout a texas football team that has lots of problems and how they come together to face them. it is also about idividual lives and how they are changed through football. this series is based on the book and a movie that are all based on a true story.

So now u see the impact football has made and how great of a sport it is.

Plays.

A play in foot ball is either defensive or offensive, a defensive play is any strategic set of movements preventing the ball from moving forward, however an offensive play is when the players try to advance the ball as much as possible. Weather the play is offensive or defensive it must have a begining and an end.

The begining of a play happens:
  •  After a scrimage, where the center usually passes the ball to the Quarterback but can be to any other bcak (Fullback or Half back).
  • A play can also be commenced after a free kick, wich can either be a kick off, after a touchdown, or a free kick, after a safety (when you are tackled in you own endzone with the ball).
The play must also end, and this happens by:
  • The ball carrier in a running play is tackled to the ground.
  • The ball is ran out of bounds by the carrier or is forced out of bounds by the oponant.
  • An incomplete pass occures, this is when a pass is thrown and not taken possesion by the reciever.
An offensive play can be played out in many ways. The two biggest categories are running plays and passing plays. Running plays start behind the line of scrimage then advance it pastthe line of scrimage to gain yards. Passing plays are usually used to gain alot of yards but can also be short and fast passes do get to your spot quickly.

There are also many defensive plays broken down into six main categories
  1. A RUSH = Its exaclly as its said, "a rush" is used to rush a play on the offensive like while making a passing play. If the rush is preformed very well it may result in a sack, chances are also very high for an interception or at least an incomplete pass.
  2. STUNTS = A stunt if more or less a better rush a bit more difficult to preform but more effective and less obvious.
  3. BLITZ = A blitz is also a form of a rush but instead of using an defensive player they will use an offensive player like a linesman to rush the QB.
  4. COVERAGE = a coverage play is used to stop a running play from the offensive team, but also being able to defend a passing play if needed.
  5. MAN-TO-MAN = Man to man coverage is often used during a blits because every receiver is covered only by 1 man.
  6. ZONE = playing zone defense is having many defensive players in one zone anticipating a pass attempt in a certain area. This often results in an interception or hard tackles.

These are rush plays by David Mils

This video explains how a defensive 5-3 stunt is ran.

This is a great blitz ran properly.

As u can see the HB was supposed to run but could not pass either.

As you can see all through out this play every man had another man to watch.

This shows the zones being covered in a zone coverage play.

Why John Elway is my favourit QB.

John Elway is by far my most favourit QB in the NFL. I say this because he is never leading his team in a negative way hes always setting new goals then acheiving them, and beating them. He made many amzing comebacks in his career, the biggest being "The Drive" the play that led the denver broncos into winning the AFC championship on january 11th 1987 between the Denver Broncos and the Cleaveland Browns. After the browns scored their touchdown making the score 20-13 they proceeded to punt the ball to the broncos. Denver muffed off of that punt and played off their 2nd yard line.

A muff is when the team recieving a punt drops the ball without having possession. In this case the team may recover the ball but is not able to advance. However if the ball is fumbled the team may recover the ball and advance.

So starting on their 2nd yard line it leaves them 5 minuts and 2 seconds to advance the ball 98 yards to score a touchdown in order to tie the game. John quickly organized "The Drive" a series of 15 plays to score a touchdown making the score 20-20 with 39 seconds remaining. Then in overtime denver won by a feild goal.

This is not the only comback he has made but definately the most remarkable comeback. Possibly of all times in NFL.

Sacks In Football

Sacks are one of footballs best moments because there never expected. A sack is when the quarter back gets tackled behind the line of scrimage with the football. The amout of yards tackled backwards counts as negitive passing yardage for the team but not the player. For example, in 1993 John Elway, the ex QB for the denver broncos, accumalated a total of 4030 passing yards. Where as denver had a total of 4061 passing yardage. now if John Elway was tackled 10 yards behind the line of scrimage his passing yards would stay the same but the broncos passing yards would drop to 4051 yards.

In this video, recorded in 1986 between the University Of Alabama (red and white) vs the University Of Notre Dame (gold and white) you see a great sack by Cornelius Bennet to Notre Dames QB Steve Beuerlein.

At the end of the video you see a painting. This is a verry well known painting rightfully named "The Sack". Steve Beuerlein says that he has a big oil painting of "The Sack" in his living room right above his couch.

This is a video of Mario williams making some amazing sacks throughout his career in college and NFL. Mario Williams played college football for 3 consecutive years before being drafted into the NFL in 2006.
